This being my first critique on dA, please bare with me. I will attempt to be as helpful as possible.

I believe that I recognize the pose from a popular Halo 4 poster, so I assume you were inspired by that and attempted to recreate it in this medium. Structurally, it is very sound and composed well considering the elements involved.

I think your only real problem is value. There is so much going on that for it to "read" clearly, you need to make value decisions that will make the depth more clear. For example, the Chief and the rocks in the foreground start to blend in with the background and this is because a lot of the background elements are just as dark as the foreground. Thus it is hard to tell where some things end and some thing begin.

I understand this is difficult with your chosen medium. And I can see that you did attempt to address this as you made the chief slightly darker than the rock wall behind him. i think that sort of contrast would need to be pushed further. It is especially problematic with the right (his left) arm.

I don't mean to sound cliche, but one method of helping decide where your darks should be darker and lights should be lighter is to squint at the image. This will help you to identify areas that are too close together or are too busy or confusing.

Attention to detail is fantastic. Linework and texture as well. If you can someho just separate the Chief from the background more believably, this will be an even better piece.

I'm hoping this was helpful. Keep up the good work <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=":) (Smile)"/>
